A Short History

There has been a ‘Beer House’ on this site since around 1850. The property was sold by auction in 1856 with the lot details described as:

“A substantial and well-built DWELLING HOUSE, now used as a Beerhouse, containing two sitting rooms, four bed-rooms, capital underground dairy, pantry, and wash-house, and detached at the back, a convenient bar, tap-room, good underground cellar and brewery, and three bed-rooms over, together with chaise-house, stable, cow stalls, hovel, and pin alley, good garden, and about two acres (more or less) of exceedingly good arable and orchard ground, planted with fruit trees, with a lindal of eight rods, the whole being desirably situate by the side of the road leading from Amberley to Rackham. This lot is copyhold of inheritance, and tithe and land tax free.”
