Invest in The Sportsman
The Sportsman pub has a long history going back to around 1850 when a beer house was erected on the current site. The current owners, bought the pub and ran what was widely acknowledged as a good local, successful pub for many years. Since they retired over 20 years ago, it has been leased to a string of not very experienced publicans seeking to run their own business. For a variety of reasons these have all been unsuccessful. At the end of 2023, the freeholder decided to sell up, leaving the pub vulnerable to closure and redevelopment into residential property.
Community Sportsman Amberley Ltd was set up in February 2024 to run the campaign to save the pub. It has been running the pub under a lease arrangement since 29 March 2024 and has proved that a viable business is possible.
It was estimated that to buy, extend and renovate the building would cost £1,200,000. Using a mix of share capital and private loans, we have raised £782,368 and are now beginning conveyancing. We hope to complete the process by mid-July 2026.
Once we own the freehold, we will start the work of applying for grants and continuing to raise share capital to fund our plans to renovate and extend the property so we can continue to grow the business.
